Indoor allergies: dust, mold and air quality issues

Indoor allergies are an increasingly common problem — especially during seasonal changes, in poorly ventilated homes, and in cities with high pollution. If you or a family member suffer from sneezing, blocked nose, wheeze, persistent cough, or itchy eyes while at home, chances are these symptoms are triggered or worsened by indoor allergies. This blog explains the main causes (dust, mold, pet dander, indoor pollutants), simple evidence-based cleaning and lifestyle steps to reduce triggers, and when to seek professional help.

The problem

Many people assume allergies only start outdoors, but the home can be the biggest source of chronic exposure. Dust mites in bedding and sofas, mold in damp corners or AC ducts, pet dander, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from paints and cleaning products, and poor ventilation all increase indoor allergen load. Repeated exposure keeps the immune system active — causing ongoing symptoms, poor sleep and reduced quality of life. Identifying and reducing indoor triggers is essential for long-term relief.

Common triggers and why they matter

  • Dust mites — microscopic insects living in mattresses, pillows, carpets and soft toys; thrive in warm, humid conditions.
  • Mould (mildew) — grows in damp bathrooms, basements, behind walls and near leaking windows; releases spores that irritate airways.
  • Pet dander & hair — tiny flakes of skin and saliva proteins that cling to fabrics.
  • Household chemicals & VOCs — from paints, aerosols, scented candles and some cleaners; they irritate the nose and lungs.
  • Poor ventilation & stale air — concentrates allergens and indoor pollutants.

Signs & symptoms to watch for

  • Sneezing, runny or blocked nose (especially at home).
  • Itchy, watery eyes and frequent eye rubbing.
  • Cough, wheeze or shortness of breath that worsens indoors.
  • Recurrent sinus infections, morning congestion, or poor sleep.
  • Symptoms that improve when you leave the house or go on holiday.

Practical, daily steps to reduce indoor allergies

1. Manage humidity — the single most effective control

Keep indoor humidity between 40–50%. Use a hygrometer to monitor levels. Use dehumidifiers in damp rooms and run exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to prevent mold growth.

2. Bedding and soft-furnishing hygiene

Wash bed sheets, pillow covers and cushion covers weekly in hot water (≥60°C) when possible. Use dust-mite-proof mattress and pillow covers. Replace old pillows every 1–2 years.

3. Smart cleaning (do it to reduce airborne re-suspension)

Vacuum with a HEPA-filter vacuum cleaner and mop floors rather than dry-dusting. Dust surfaces using a damp cloth (this traps and removes dust instead of sending it into the air).

4. Control mould at its source

Fix leaks promptly, dry wet areas within 24–48 hours, and inspect behind furniture and under sinks. For small visible mould patches, clean with diluted vinegar or a mild bleach solution (follow safety instructions); for widespread mould, call a professional remediation service.

5. Improve ventilation & air filtration

Open windows for short periods when outdoor air is less polluted. Use air purifiers with HEPA filters in bedrooms and common areas — these remove fine particulates, pet dander and many allergy triggers.

6. Reduce indoor pollutant sources

Avoid smoking indoors. Choose low-VOC paints and fragrance-free cleaning products. Air out new carpets, furniture and paint before long-term use.

7. Pet management without giving pets up (if possible)

Keep pets out of bedrooms, bathe pets regularly, and groom them outdoors. Use washable beds for pets and vacuum pet areas more frequently.

8. Routine checks for hidden sources

Inspect AC filters, ductwork, humidifiers and dehumidifiers — clean and replace filters per manufacturer instructions. Even decorative indoor plants can harbour mold in overwatered soil — avoid overwatering.

9. Simple home remedies to ease symptoms (supportive)

Saline nasal irrigation (neti) can wash out allergens and reduce nasal congestion. Steam inhalation might soothe irritated airways temporarily. These support symptom relief but don’t replace source control.

When to see a doctor — red flags

  • Symptoms that significantly affect daily life, sleep or work.
  • Recurrent chest infections, persistent wheeze, or breathlessness.
  • Symptoms not improving despite home measures.
If you have these, you may need allergy testing (skin or blood tests), a targeted treatment plan (antihistamines, nasal sprays, inhalers) or environmental advice tailored to your home.
